Ireland is in a unique position on
abortion; we respect life, which makes us unique as a nation.
In the United States the law that
legalised abortion is now viewed as flawed, "A pre born child is not
considered a person".
When the Omagh Bombing happened in 1998
one of the shocking stories was the death of a mother and her pre-born
babies. The father of those babies, Mr.
Rush, sadly passed away in March of this year. His love for his wife
and his quest for justice lead him to campaign tirelessly for the truth.
This truth applies to the right
to life of the unborn child. Ending the life of an unborn baby is not a
solution. Life begins and should be
allowed to take its natural course, no act to deliberately interfere with
that life should be permitted and the law should uphold what is in the
greatest interest of society. Abortion does not belong here.
In a recent episode of Grey’s
Anatomy, the hospital based TV show, one of the doctors was confronted
with a premature baby. The parents were
doctors, and medically the baby had no chance of survival. The mother of the baby was advised to leave
her medical hat off, and use her intuition even if that meant going it alone. She decided to trust life and allowed the
baby a chance of survival - relying on her love. The baby proved to be a fighter and survived. This is the beauty and mystery of life.
In recent time there has been a
significant rise in the number of women who have come out and said they have
regretted their abortions, more and more people realise it is just not the
immediate problem of unwanted pregnancy but the pieces of life that have
to be picked up after a woman has undergone an abortion.
As a society, we must strive to ensure
that women in crisis pregnancy receive all necessary supports from their
communities, during pregnancy and after their child is born. And we must extend our compassion and
support to women hurt by abortion.
The culture of abortion forces us to look
to the future. Has life no worth at the
start? Keeping Ireland abortion-free is
in the interests of humanity, we must all look to our own existence, and it is
not about choices, it is about truth and respect. It is not a valid choice to choose whether a child in the womb
has value.
Regardless of circumstances or problems
encountered, unborn children deserve to have their voices heard. We must remain the light to other nations in
respecting life.
